Regular eye exams are essential for maintaining lifelong vision and overall eye health. At Tecumseh Eyecare, we provide thorough eye exams for adults, seniors, and children. Our focus is on prevention, early detection, and personalized care.

As part of our comprehensive approach to eye care, we integrate diagnostic technology, including OCT scans, widefield retinal imaging, and visual field testing, to examine your eyes for any early indications of eye disease or systemic health conditions. We are here to support your overall and visual health, and routine eye exams are the cornerstone of a long-term preventive healthcare plan.

How Often Should You Have an Eye Exam?

At every age, regular trips to the optometrist are important to monitor your eye health. The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends the following exam frequency:

  • Adults (20–64) should have an eye exam every 2 years
  • Seniors (65+) should have an eye exam annually

Depending on your risk factors for vision problems or eye diseases, such as family history and existing health conditions, we may recommend a personalized schedule tailored to your needs.

Why Do You Need an Eye Exam?

Even if your vision seems clear, underlying conditions, such as eye diseases or functional vision concerns, can go unnoticed without a comprehensive exam. Regular exams allow us to identify:

  • Eye diseases, including glaucoma, cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, and more
  • Systemic health conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease, can impact your eyes
  • Vision problems, such as refractive errors like near- and farsightedness or eye coordination problems
  • Digital eye strain, which can cause eye fatigue, headaches, and blurred vision

What Happens in an Eye Exam?

When you come in for your eye exam, we’ll start with a review of your medical history and discuss any family history of eye disease. Then, our team will guide you through a series of tests using our diagnostic technology to assess your vision, eye health, and overall eye function.

If we identify any issues, we collaborate with you to create a personalized treatment plan that protects your vision while considering your lifestyle and vision needs.

What Is a Dilated Eye Exam?

We recommend dilated eye exams as part of your routine check. We dilate your pupils with a special eye drop that helps open them wider. This allows your optometrist to get a better view of the inside of your eye, helping detect conditions such as:

  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Glaucoma
  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)

Dilated vision may be blurry and sensitive to light for a few hours, so we suggest bringing sunglasses and arranging transportation if needed.

Our eye exams are comprehensive, informative, and tailored to your needs. The tests that we complete at each exam may vary depending on your risk factors, any symptoms or concerns you have noticed, and how frequently we recommend each test for your specific care. If you have any questions about the exam process, or if you have a specific question or concern about your vision, let us know. We’re happy to provide answers and look deeper into your concerns as needed.
